Storyline: During the mid-19th century, in what is now South Dakota, Crazy Horse (Michael Greyeyes) of the Oglala Sioux rises to prominence in his tribe. He falls in love with the married Black Buffalo Woman (Irene Bedard), and uses his trance-like visions to help his uncle, Chief Red Cloud (Wes Studi), and his people fight for independence against the advancing American forces. Eventually, they defeat General Custer (Peter Horton) and his men, but they then must face the reality of Westward expansion.

#4. Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Storyline: After an outlaw unknowingly leads a band of cannibalistic Troglodytes into the peaceful western town of Bright Hope, the monsters kidnap several settlers, including the wife of a local rancher. Despite his injured leg the rancher joins a small rescue party with the sheriff, his aging deputy and a strong-willed gunslinger. What follows is a journey into hell on earth as the posse comes to realize it is up against a foe whose savagery knows no bounds. The film takes place at the turn of the century around the border of what is now Texas and New Mexico.

#5. God's Country and the Man (1937)

Storyline: Filled with long-and-medium archive-footage shots from an earlier John Wayne Lone Star/Monogram western, especially in the riding-and-and-chase sequences. Red Gentry robs a store and kills the owner, whose son, Jim Reid, swears revenge. Gentry deserts his sweetheart, Roxey, and heads north. Jim and Roxey meet while both are trailing Gentry, and Jim suspects a relationship between her and Gentry and tries to gain her confidence. Both stop to rest in a Montana town and Sandy Briggs, local blacksmith, finds a gold nugget in the shoe of Roxey's horse. Both insist the location of where the ore was picked up is her claim, and Roxey becomes rich. Up in Canada, Gentry and his henchies pull a robbery and the RCMP are on his trail. Mountie Bill, Betty's brother, is shot by Gentry but Jim saves his life. Roxey spends all her money on a big dance-hall-saloon hoping to bring Gentry there to trap him for Jim.
