#16. Black Market Rustlers (1943)

Storyline: In this 23rd entry in Monogram's 24-film "Range Buster" series, the ranchers around Winston are having their cattle stolen, for black market purposes, by a gang of rustler's using trailer trucks. The government sends Range Busters Crash, Denny and Alibi to investigate and put an end to this activity. Crash comes across the body of the federal agent who had sent for him and is accused by gang-member Slade of the murder, and is turned over to Sheriff Harley. Denny takes a job on the ranch owned by Fred Prescott, and immediately falls in love with Prescott's daughter, Linda. Alibi finally convinces the sheriff that Crash is a federal agent and the sheriff agrees to let Crash work, using the jail cell as his cover. Alibi learns that Corbin, respected citizen, is actually the gang leader, and also discovers the truck used to convey the cattle to the slaughter house. Crash, Denny and Alibi secrete themselves in the truck and accompany the gang to their next raid.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

#17. The Tioga Kid (1948)

Storyline: "The Tioga Kid" is a remake of 1946's "Driftin' Kid" with only slight plot changes - hero Eddie Dean now has an identical twin brother working with the outlaws of stock from the original, all of the songs are recycled, most of the character names are the same, and the main difference is Jennifer Holt is now playing the role that Shirley Patterson had in "Driftin' River" as "Jenny Morgan," while most of the original cast - Dennis Moore, William Fawcett, Lee Bennett - are also here using the same character role names and, in some instances, the same footage. Eddie Dean and sidekick Soapy Jones return some stolen cattle (instead of horses) to Jenny Morgan, and Eddie runs off ranch hand Tucson Brown, who is working with the outlaws, led by Joe Morino, that includes Eddie's (unknown to him) twin Clint Mason/The Tioga Kid. After Jenny sees a wanted poster that makes her think Eddie is the Tioga Kid, Eddie has a hard time before bringing the gang to justice, aided by the change-of-heart Tioga Kid. Dean has more shirt changes than usual because of the dual role and stock footage from "Driftin' River."—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
