#9. Churchill and the Movie Mogul (2019)

Storyline: Winston Churchill was mad about films, arguably more so than any other politician in history, but the true extent of his use of them as a war weapon has not been previously explored. Before the Second World War, one of Britain's most celebrated film producers, Alexander Korda, signed up Churchill as a screenwriter and historical advisor, and a unique collaboration began. Churchill provided script advice for Korda's productions and also penned an epic screenplay. When war broke out, their collaboration became of immeasurable importance. Alexander Korda was sent on a spy mission to Hollywood with the aim of bringing America into the war. Using previously undiscovered documents, that mission and the friendship which underpinned it is explored for the first time in a new documentary by writer-director John Fleet.—January Pictures

#10. November Days (1992)

Storyline: The film was commissioned by the BBC and shot one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall. By way of a series of interviews, it explores the "hangover" in the wake of German reunification. In taking stock of this situation, Ophuls quickly departs from the conventional reportage model, approaching his material in a playful manner and infusing his commentary on it with ironic humor. His interviewees - who range from GDR head of state Egon Krenz, dramatist Heiner Müller and neo-Nazi Michael Kühnen to members of the general public - are not degraded into contemporary witnesses of a fact-driven narrative. Rather, it is through their experiences and perspectives that the story emerges.—X

#13. Heimat is a Space in Time (2019)

Storyline: Heise's latest, Heimat is a Space in Time, is a monumental work that traces four generations of his family's archives, from the 19th century to the present - their intimate stories revealing the larger cultural and political events that have shaped the past hundred years of German history. The collage of documents in Heise's brilliant essay film include letters and diaries that he reads, in voiceover, to luminous black-and-white images of various German landscapes and spaces. In this immersive work, silences reveal as much as what is said, with fragments drawing attention to what is missing. Heise's family was torn apart only to have subsequent generations coalesce and try to make sense of their remnants. Heimat is a Space in Time spans both world wars, economic collapse, a horrific genocide, and the rise and fall of political ideologies, and it is Heise's focus on the small details of personal experience, the subtlest shifts of light across a landscape, that make for his film's most visceral experiences.—Toronto International Film Festival
