#18. Adoration (2008)

Storyline: Simon, a Toronto high school student, has been raised by his maternal Uncle Tom since Simon's parents, Rachel and Sami, died in a car accident eight years ago. Tom, a tow truck driver, decided to move to the city into Rachel's house and assume the mortgage, something he could ill afford, largely not to disrupt Simon's life, but equally to get away from his and Rachel's father, Morris, an openly bigoted man. That upbringing has made Tom a sullen and angry man. Morris only recently passed away. Rachel and Sami met when she, a violinist, brought her instrument in to be serviced, Sami the repairman. Simon now owns his mother's expensive violin, which Tom would like to sell to help pay the mortgage and Simon's imminent university tuition. One day at school, Simon's French teacher Sabine reads a French newspaper story from several years ago as a translation exercise for the class, the story about a pregnant woman traveling to Israel, her then boyfriend who, unknown to her, planted a bomb in her luggage intended to blow up while the airplane was in flight, meaning that if it was not caught before departure, which it was, it would have killed her and their unborn child. Because Simon interestingly translates the story from the perspective of him being that unborn child now a teenager, Sabine, who is also the school's drama teacher, asks Simon to flesh out the story as a play, either in French or English. Simon begins to pedal the story widely as his reality, in other words that the woman in question truly was his mother Rachel and the bomber truly was who ended up being his Palestinian father, Sami, which may or may not in fact be true. Simon, Sabine and Tom all have to make decisions surrounding this issue, which they do to help their individual self deal with his or her own reality of the situation.—Huggo

Still, because he is a 'good boy', he plays on the soundless piano, and takes weekly lessons from a piano teacher so eccentric that she will only allow him to strum out the notes on her dining room table... until, like real planets when other bodies get too close, he finds himself pulled and moved in a different direction.—BOB STEBBINS <stebinsbob@aol.com>

Now, in a relationship for a year, Jordan plans on asking her to marry him on a week-long romantic vacation they are taking to Niagara Falls. Rachel not only decides not to go on the trip, but dumps him when he, learning that she isn't going, asks her to marry him the day before the trip instead. The primary reason she dumps him?: he's lousy in bed, she not being able to envision bad, boring sex with him for the rest of her life. Rachel convinces him to take the vacation by himself, instead hanging out in Toronto with his college friend Dandak, his return from the vacation when they will talk about the break-up in more detail. Dandak, a sex machine, sees his role in his mending his friend's broken heart as getting him back in the dating scene. Jordan, however, can only think about getting Rachel back, he believing the best way to be a better lover by getting sex pointers from Dandak and to make Rachel jealous by texting her a photograph of him together with a sexy woman. The woman who obliges his sexy photograph request is Julia Bowe, a stripper he befriends. Due to Dandak's changing circumstance, Jordan turns to sexually-liberated Jules also to be his non-sex sex teacher, he in return helping her manage her dismal finances, she who has no concept of money or its management beyond buying whatever she wants. In Jordan and Jules' not always smooth student-teacher and teacher-student relationships, in what ends up being Jordan and Rachel's truncated week apart, and in Dandak dealing with his new situation, each in the collective may eventually come to the realization of what and who he or she wants in life, the further issue being if they can admit these realizations to themselves and the people that matter.—Huggo

Believing her husband still alive, Theresa hires the young Cole Willis to find Ambrose. Cole is a junior detective with the Tratt Detective Agency, which handles much of the security for the Small family businesses. Edgar Tratt originally hired Cole as a favor to his father and acts as Cole's mentor. As Cole enters into his investigation, he believes that some people know more than they let on about Ambrose's disappearance, whether it be Jack, who absconded with $100,000 of the Small's money, Jack's slatternly wife Vivian Doughty, or Theresa herself, the latter despite Cole's growing attraction to her.—Huggo
