#3. The Mystery of Picasso (1956)

Storyline: Using a specially designed transparent 'canvas' to provide an unobstructed view, Picasso creates as the camera rolls. He begins with simple works that take shape after only a single brush stroke. He then progresses to more complex paintings, in which he repeatedly adds and removes elements, transforming the entire scene at will, until at last the work is complete.—Jean-Marc Rocher <rocher@fiberbit.net>

#6. Marcel Duchamp: The Art of the Possible (2020)

Storyline: The film explores the life, philosophy and impact of one of the most influential early 20th century modernists, Marcel Duchamp. The film breaks down Duchamp's ideas and applies them to both historical events and the modernist explosion that blanketed the early 20th century. Art of the Possible isn't simply a biopic; rather, the film shows how Duchamp's ideas changed the public consciousness, and our understanding of aesthetics, art, and culture. The film highlights the singular impact of Duchamp's philosophy on art, and, more importantly, examines how Duchamp's revolutionary ideas from the early 20th century have shaped the 21st century and modern day.

#7. Homage to Chagall: The Colours of Love (1977)

Storyline: The documentary made in 1976 by the Canadian TV is already a piece of art history by itself, a precious documentary having caught on screen Marc Chagall at almost 90 years, yet looking in full power and at the pick of his wit, remembering and commenting of key aspects of his life and art. He is helped by his second wife Vava who translates from French to English for the interview, and some of the inexactitudes and short cuts she is taking are also not only amusing but documentary significant. Almost seven decades of the history and history of art of the20th century are reviewed by one of its greatest artist. Chagall remembers events and people, he reflects on the role that his family and his Jewish background played in his art, but overall he talks to us about his love for life and people and the way he tried and wonderfully succeeded to turn it into art. The commentary is sometimes too apologetic, but after all the name of the film is 'Homage to Chagall'. The filming of the paintings is quite good quality taking into account that the film was made before the era of the digital capture. Overall the documentary will stay for many years as the best or one of the best made about the painter, and the inclusion of the interview is priceless.

#8. My Kid Could Paint That (2007)

Storyline: Four year old Marla Olmstead from Binghamton, New York became the sensation of the art world for her abstract artwork, which have sold for thousands of dollars per piece. The showing of her work started off as a lark, but when the paintings sold without the buyers knowing who the artist was, the media began to run with the story. Through it all, Marla's parents, Mark Olmstead and Laura Olmstead, want to be grounded in what is best for their daughter while exposing her to whatever positive may come from the experience. But some negative and big name media also surfaces, some questioning whether Marla is the real artist behind the work, and some questioning exposing a four year old to such infamy. Regardless, the fact of this art selling brings up the legitimacy of abstract art being quantified as "quality", especially if a four year old can produce it but can't express the emotions or rationale behind its creation. Or is art truly in the eyes of the beholder? Regardless, money, in the art world as is much in life, becomes the great equalizer.—Huggo
