Storyline: Menashe, a widower, lives and works within the Hasidic community of Borough Park, Brooklyn. Since his wife passed away a year before, he has been trying hard to regain custody of his nine-year-old son, Rieven. But the rabbi (and all the community behind him) will not hear of it unless he re-marries, which Menashe does not want, his first marriage having been very unhappy. Father and son get on well together, but can Menashe take care of Rieven properly? Not really for all his goodwill as he holds down a low-paid job as a grocery clerk that consumes too much of his efforts and energy. #18. I Love You, Rosa (1972)

Storyline: The love of Nissim for his widowed sister-in-law, Rosa in the Old City of Jerusalem at the turn of the century. Under (very old) Jewish religious law, Nissim has the duty and obligation to marry his childless sister-in-law on the death of his brother. He is very fond of her and grows to love her. However, he is only eleven, and newly single Rosa is not interested in either child-rearing or remarriage. She starts to work in a Hamam (bath-house) as a laundrywoman and a tailor at nights. Meanwhile, Nissim is fired from home and they live together for two years. He learns But when he learns cotton ginning and makes money in this way, he starts to act like an adult and insults her, so she shoos him away. 5 years later, he comes back with marriage in mind. Their conflicts and growing love resolve in a satisfying conclusion.

Storyline: Jake and Brian are friends. They are Jewish and Catholic respectively. They would grow up and become a rabbi and priest. Anna, whom they knew when they were younger, comes back to town a stunning woman. Jake is up to be the head of his synagogue but he is not married which doesn't make his appointment any easier. Jake finds himself attracted to Anna but because she's not Jewish, he can't marry her as it would make his appointment less likely. Brian also finds himself attracted to Anna, but the priesthood doesn't allow that. Their friendship is strained when each learns of the other's feelings for her.

Storyline: Living in Oakland, California, the Naumanns are outwardly a loving, supportive family. So when Saul eventually learns that Eliza is participating and excelling in spelling bees, she becomes the focus of his life as he believes that letters in the form of words will lead to answers to the universe. That change in focus to Eliza makes Aaron now feel the neglected one, he who strikes out quietly in his own way with the help of Chali, a young woman he meets. But the person who has felt the most pressure within Saul's way of life is his wife, Miriam Naumann, a microbiologist. She converted from Catholicism to Judaism when she and Saul married.
