#17. Death Rides the Range (1940)

Storyline: Ken Baxter and his two pals, Pancho and Panhandle, discover Professor Wahl injured and wandering on the range. They take him to the Blue Mesa Trading Post, where two archaeologists, Dr. Flotow and Baron Starkoff, foreign government representatives, are staying. Both want to secure control of a supply of helium gas found in an ancient Indian cave. Wahl, working for the federal government, is murdered at the Blue Mesa. The land strip on which the cave is located is claimed by Letty and Jim Morgan, brother and sister owners of the Lazy Y Ranch. Tin Cup Ranch owner Joe Larkin hires Ken to take possession of a cabin on the Morgan land in order to gain title. Storyline: Tom Wade (Tom Tyler), agent for the Cattleman's Protective Association, receives word that his brother Ed Wade (Bob Terry), a cattle rancher, has disappeared and is suspected of murder. Tom goes to Ed's ranch and learns from Ed's wife, Annie (Dorothy Short), that Chandler (George Morrell) the banker was killed and robbed of a large amount on money. The bullet taken from Chandler's body was proved to have been fired from Ed's gun. During the investigation, Tom, working undercover, meets Celia Chandler (Lois Wilde), the banker's daughter, who is also trying to find out who killed her father. She accuses Ed of the murder and suspects Tom of being an accomplice. Tom's investigation leads him to suspect a lawyer named Jeff Tracey (Roger Williams), and while Tom is seeking proof, he learns that Tracey and his henchmen have Ed as a prisoner. Tom is ambushed and captured when he is about to discover where Tracey and his henchmen have Ed hidden, Mealwhile Celia has found Ed and discovered the truth. She hides when the outlaws arrive with Tom as their prisoner and later succeeds in releasing Tom. Storyline: Ass-breaker Dingus Magee is looking for a gold train when he comes upon old acquaintance Hoke Birdsill on stage to San Francisco, California, and robs him of his money. Hoke goes to the nearby town of Yerkey's Hole, where Belle Knops is both Mayor and bordello-madam. She appoints Hoke town Sheriff and tries to get him to stir up the Indians so the soldiers at the nearby fort (the main customers) won't go to Little Big Horn. Dingus tries to stir up more trouble, and gets involved with the pale, baby-talking Indian, Anna.
