Storyline: George Matthews is a young man who is having a bittersweet affair with a French divorcée in Los Angeles. Waiting to be drafted, he is unable to commit himself to anything or anybody, including his girlfriend Gloria. While trying to raise money to prevent his car from being repossessed, George is attracted to Lola, a Frenchwoman who works in a "model shop" (an establishment which rents out beautiful pin-up models to photographers). George spends his last twelve dollars to photograph her, and discovers that she is as unhappy as he. Storyline: Arriving home from the NFL draft Austin Aimes is a broken man returning to a broken town and a celebration he won't receive. As a top rated college quarterback it seemed Austin had a lock on the life he always wanted to live, but now a destroyed knee seems to be his only guarantee -- a guarantee that is sidelining him from his dream and serving as a daily reminder that the dismantling of the draft clock reveals no time left. Storyline: Horace Pope (Alfred Lynch) is just an everyday street peddler when the authorities pick him up for practicing his trade. Not wanting to go to jail, Pope invents a story about enlisting in the military, which convinces the judge to send him to the Royal Air Force instead of prison. Since it happens to be during World War II, Pope pulls every scheme and scam he can -- with the help of his new soldier friend, Pedlar Pascoe (Sean Connery) -- to avoid actual work, but he can't shirk his duty forever.
