Spitzer had a hard driving, take no prisoners approach to prosecuting criminals. When he focused his efforts on Wall Street, he came up against some very powerful men. The chink in his armor was an escort whom he met regularly. When the fact that he spent time with a prostitute became public the knives came out so to speak, and Spitzer found himself isolated, resigning the Governorship. At one point, Spitzer recounts the story of a friend who gave him a t-shirt with 'Hubris is Terminal' printed on the front. A fitting epitaph somehow for his political career.—garykmcd

This film brings to life the reality of their beautiful and painful love story, using remarkable and ingenuously edited archive material. It also includes reenactments of the conversations Goldsmith had with his father in preparation for his book. The dynamic that emerges in the interaction between Martin Goldsmith himself, as the unseen interviewer, and a vulnerable Bruno Ganz, playing his father Georg Goldsmith, is fascinating. On one occasion Ganz even references his legendary role as Hitler in Der Untergang (2004), when Goldsmith, Sr., mimics an agitated Nazi official who stamps his visa. Once there, with the loss of Monir in the wartime chaos, they are captured by Northern Alliance fighters. They are then handed them over the American forces who transport them to the prison camps at the Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba. What follows is three years of relentless imprisonment, interrogations and torture to make them submit to blatantly wrong confessions to being terrorists.
