Storyline: 1927 Hollywood. Monumental Pictures' biggest stars, glamorous on-screen couple Lina Lamont and Don Lockwood, are also an off-screen couple if the trade papers and gossip columns are to be believed. Both perpetuate the public perception if only to please their adoring fans and bring people into the movie theaters. In reality, Don barely tolerates her, while Lina, despite thinking Don beneath her, simplemindedly believes what she sees on screen in order to bolster her own stardom and sense of self-importance. R.F. Simpson, Monumental's head, dismisses what he thinks is a flash in the pan: talking pictures. It isn't until The Jazz Singer (1927) becomes a bona fide hit which results in all the movie theaters installing sound equipment that R.F. knows Monumental, most specifically in the form of Don and Lina, have to jump on the talking picture bandwagon, despite no one at the studio knowing anything about the technology. Storyline: All the hot gamblers are in town, and they're all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week's incarnation of "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York"; the only problem is, he needs $1000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, who's short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan's $1000 bet that he can't get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you've got quite a musical. Storyline: Million Dollar Mermaid tells the story of Australian swimming sensation Annette Kellerman, who overcame childhood polio to go on and achieve fame as a professional swimmer and film star in the early decades of the 20th century. Storyline: In London, the former dancer of the Barry Nichols and Les Girls Company and presently Lady Sybil Wren is sued by her former roommate and fellow dancer Angèle Ducros. Sybil wrote a best-seller based on her memoirs from the time she was a dancer and lived with Angèle and Joanne 'Joy' Henderson and in a chapter she discloses the affair of Angèle with Barry and how she committed an attempt of suicide when Barry left her. However, Angèle tells a different story to the court and discloses that Sybil was indeed who had an affair with Barry. Storyline: The Divine Didi, a European actress known more for her bubble bath scenes than for her acting, decides she has had enough with bubble baths and wants to be taken seriously as an actress. So-much-so that during the filming of a bubble bath scene, she runs away and winds up in Oregon. While staying in a hotel, the operator accidentally connects her with a real estate agent named Tom Meade, instead of the kitchen, and asks him to bring her some food. When he does, he suggests she go to his cabin in the woods. She also asks him not to tell anyone where she is because she doesn't want to go back to Hollywood.
