Short Review

This is possibly the worst war movie of all time at multiple levels. It is catastrophically historically inaccurate and fake. It does not represent any actual battle fought. American forces appear to use M1 rifles made from plastic. It fantasises about the level of German infiltration of American forces (which did occur, but not to the extent portrayed). General Omar Bradley was not "in the field" taking instructions from some Major, as ridiculously shown in the film - he was in Paris with Eisenhower at the time of the battle, which is probably where he would have been most effective, given his "remarkable" leadership as a General. Patton gave the battle leadership by suggesting to Eisenhower his 3rd army relieve the 101st Airborne division at Bastogne - not Bradley and some Major - Bradley eschewed leading at the front. The film is probably the most woodenly and poorly scripted since Pearl Harbour (which was basically a theft of the original "Tora, Tora, Tora"), but without any drama, instinct, tension or suspense - it is a war movie that's not even an anti-war movie (which is, at bottom, what all war movies are and should be) - it's a charade of chatting clowns wandering about in the snow. Most ridiculously, American Sherman "tankers" are shouting inside their vehicles to "hold fire" while German soldiers are swarming over them and trying to look through their periscopes and, when they do open fire, the tank commander doesn't even bother to issue co-ordinates or targets. Seriously?!!! Did the movie makers think that, somehow, Sherman tanks were sound vacuums? This movie is so bad I regret the few dollars I spent on renting it. It is also about an hour of my life I will never retrieve.
