Short Review

It is light-hearted movie about a crucial moment and it smells of Paris at the turn of the 70' to the 80's. The film concentrates on the relationship between Maxime and Isabelle. Unfortunately, since I am not fluent in french, I had to watch the dubbed vhs tape and occasionally turn back to the french dvd so that I understood what was said. This slowed down the pace of the movie considerably for me, so I have to point out that this isn't really a slow paced film. Also, so very many great european, french, movies are out there that aren't available at the non-french public. It's romantic comedy at its 'purest' form. I do not usually watch this type of movie, so it was refreshing change for me. The movie was fun and had funny lines. I laughed more than once, so I thought this was a witty, succesful comedy. It's not slapstick, make no mistake - it's just simply light headed and well-meaning, with some very emotional scenes included. My favorites are those two where Maxime goes to buy a huge bunch of flowers and rushes back to Isabelle's bed at the hospital, and the end of the movie, where Isabelle has written Maxime a note by the christmas tree, knowing exactly what he was thinking. I think that scene and the shower scene are the best scene in the film. A word of warning to the 2009 Hollywood-action-movie fans who set out to watch this movie: You'll need a different set of mind to enjoy this movie. I cannot take you to that set of mind however, and sadly, I am not sure anyone deliberately can. Those of you who are at that state of mind already know what I am talking about. Some of the scenes are hilarious, such as the cartoon lines Maxime hears in his head at moments of 'crisis'. Major Gutterbill and Wanda, what a pair.I adored Isabelle and her smile, without another actress I much doubt that this film would have been so fine. I give the film five stars: Four for the movie, one for Isabelle. Even though my review is biased, the film is indeed a well done romantic comedy. I also think the film now gains more depth because it was filmed in 1980's - one may view it as a 'time-window'. Where are Isabelle and Maxime now? What happened to Major Gutterbill and his beautiful Wanda?
