Storyline

During the Boer War, three Australian lieutenants are on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though they acted under orders, they are being used as scapegoats by the General Staff, who hopes to distance themselves from the irregular practices of the war. The trial does not progress as smoothly as expected by the General Staff, as the defence puts up a strong fight in the courtroom.

Short Review

Bruce Beresford's Breaker Morant is a remarkable bit of filmmaking, reminiscent in theme to Kubrick's Paths of Glory. The time is 1900 and the place is South Africa during the Boer War. Three soldiers are court marshalled for the murders of six prisoners and a German missionary, the intent being that they be found guilty and executed in order to facilitate diplomatic wartime relations. It's riveting from start to finish, thanks to great performances, a stellar script, and sure-handed direction from Beresford. In one scene towards the end, he allows the camera to linger for an extended period on a prisoner's face after being sentenced, allowing the audience to process what is going through the soldier's mind. This is a powerful film.
