#21. Love Thy Neighbor (1940)

Storyline: Jack Benny is preparing his New Year's Eve radio broadcast but takes time out to take his valet Rochester to meet his girlfriend Josephine arriving on a steamer. Fred Allen and his sister Barbara are also en route to the dock to meet Barbara's daughter Mary, returning from a personal appearance tour in South America. Josephine is her maid. Their cars get involved in an accident and, in a bumping contest, Fred reduces Jack's old Maxwell to junk, and is taken to jail. Mary loses her dress in an accident and Jack offers to get her another one, but winds up being arrested for stealing. Barbara tells Mary that Fred is a nervous wreck because of Jack's continual slander of him on Jack's radio program. Jack hires the Merry Macs away from Fred and Fred decides to go to Miami for a rest. Jack decides to open his radio program from Miami. They meet, have another brawl, and end up in jail again. The two are in a motorboat accident where both are knocked unconscious and Mary, in an effort to end the feud, tells Fred that Jack saved his life. Storyline: After Sir Karell Borotin is found dead in his study, drained of his blood, the local doctor determines that he was killed by a vampire. The coroner and police Inspector Neumann dismiss the suggestion but a year later, Sir Karell's daughter is attacked and bite marks are found on her throat. Neumann calls in the eminent Professor Zelin who thinks the story of vampires is true. The locals are convinced that Count Mora and his daughter Luna are the perpetrators of the crime, creatures of the night that can turn themselves into bats. Storyline: Famous actress Helen Walbridge gives her lover, Stuart McAllister, the key to her apartment intending to meet him there after a party celebrating her latest success. Stuart finds Helen's daughter, Lois Johnson, when he gets there, waiting for her mother. Lois has been hidden in a school by Helen so it will not be known she has a 19-year-old daughter, which may interfere with her career. Stuart and Lois become great friends, causing Helen to become jealous enough to convince Lois she's in love with upper crust society bachelor Russell Gray when they meet at a party and he proposes. But when Lois meets Russell's family at their estate she feels totally out of place, and calls Stuart to come and take her home. Storyline: At a border town, Eddie Dean and his partner, Soapy Jones, attend a fiesta at the home of Don Lopez who, in accordance with his custom, displays a valuable diamond necklace to his guests and has one of them, Maria, wear it. Jim Barrett, another guest, offers to buy the necklace but Don Lopez declines to sell. Barrett, with his henchmen Corey and Avery, plan to steal the necklace and the rest of the Lopez diamonds. Maria, to Eddie's surprise, appears to be working with the outlaws.
