Storyline: Andre-Louis Moreau is a nobleman's bastard in the days of the French revolution. Noel, the Marquis de Mayne, a nobleman in love with the Queen, is ordered to seek the hand of a young ingenue, Aline, in marriage. Andre also meets Aline, and forms an interest in her. But when the marquis kills his best friend Andre declares himself the Marquis's enemy and vows to avenge his friend. He hides out, a wanted man, as an actor in a commedia troupe, and spends his days learning how to handle a sword. Storyline: Henriette and Louise, a foundling, are raised together as sisters. When Louise goes blind, Henriette swears to take care of her forever. Only Chevalier de Vaudrey is kind to her, and they fall in love. The French Revolution replaces the corrupt Aristocracy with the equally corrupt Robespierre. Storyline: Charles Darnay is the nephew of the Marquis St. Evremonde in pre-Revolutionary France, but disagrees with the French feudal system and emigrates to England, where he is falsely accuses him of being a spy. He is found innocent through the skill of Sydney Carton, an alcoholic English barrister. Darnay is supported by beautiful Lucy Manette, whom he met on the trip across the Channel, and her father, Doctor Manette, a victim of the aristocracy unjustly imprisoned for many years in the Bastille. Carton falls in love with Lucy, but she loves Darnay and subsequently marries him. Carton's love remains unrequited, but it propels him to sobriety.
