#19. There Are No Fakes (2019)

Storyline: Barenaked Ladies' keyboardist Kevin Hearn, an art collector, goes shopping at the respectable Maslak-McLeod Gallery intending to purchase a Norval Morrisseau (1932-2007) - arguably the first modern Canadian indigenous painter to receive widespread acclaim - the one ultimately purchased being for $20,000. While Hearn is displaying his art collection, including the Morrisseau, at the Art Gallery of Ontario, he is informed by the gallery owner that he has removed that painting from the display as it is a fake. Going back to Maslak-McLeod to get his money back, Hearn faces resistance from gallery owner Joe McLeod for several reasons, Hearn in turn suing McLeod for the $20,000, such an act which has never been successful in the difficulty of proving the intent of fraud even if the piece itself can be proved to be a fake. This public act opens the heated discussion among a number of individuals on both sides of the issues: on one side, the so-called experts and Morrisseau insiders who believe they can identify fakes, and on the other side Morrisseau private collectors and independent dealers who assert that there are no fake Morrisseaus in circulation, both sides contending that their stance is first and foremost to protect Morrisseau's good name and reputation. While this heated discussion is a direct result of the legal action, Hearn will find that the story spins off into directions that he probably never envisioned including illegal drug dealing, sexual assault and the broader issue of the effects of western colonization on the indigenous peoples, with many involved in the story musing about what Morrisseau would have thought about the proceedings if he was still alive.—Huggo

Franky and Ballas are among the popular group of students, and are on the school swim team together, Ballas being the team captain. While Ballas has just started a sexual relationship with Jessica, Franky in turn could have his choice of any girl - at least according to the scuttlebutt provided to him by his friend Mouse, a boy trapped in a girl's body, from what she overhears in the girls' washroom. But Franky has chosen to date Cil (Priscilla), they planning to have their first sexual encounter the night of his seventeenth birthday party. Franky's first was almost Ballas' younger sister, Tash, who has just returned to school following "the incident" for which she is now labeled a slut and she is now sneaking alcohol to cope. When Franky and Cil's planned post-party sexual encounter falls through at the last minute, Franky and Ballas end up having a drunken bros' night out after the party, which leads to the start of a sexual encounter between the two of them. Word of this encounter begins to circulate among their classmates. Franky is painted as the gay one and is shunned by his so-called friends, including Cil and Ballas, because of it. #28. My Kid Could Paint That (2007)

Storyline: Four year old Marla Olmstead from Binghamton, New York became the sensation of the art world for her abstract artwork, which have sold for thousands of dollars per piece. Through it all, Marla's parents, Mark Olmstead and Laura Olmstead, want to be grounded in what is best for their daughter while exposing her to whatever positive may come from the experience. But some negative and big name media also surfaces, some questioning whether Marla is the real artist behind the work, and some questioning exposing a four year old to such infamy. Regardless, the fact of this art selling brings up the legitimacy of abstract art being quantified as "quality", especially if a four year old can produce it but can't express the emotions or rationale behind its creation. Or is art truly in the eyes of the beholder? Regardless, money, in the art world as is much in life, becomes the great equalizer.—Huggo
