Based on the life of tap-dancing legend Bill Robinson -- also known as Mr. Bojangles -- the film follows Robinson (Gregory Hines) as he climbs his way up the entertainment ladder from lowly vaudeville performer to one of the greatest black entertainers of his time. However, despite Robinson's meteoric rise and the support of his loyal agent, Marty Forkins (Peter Riegert), his compulsive gambling and love of women keep him from enjoying the success his talents have earned him.

This particular effort, directed by Joseph Sargent, compensates for its standard storytelling with some visual stylishness and Hines' fast footwork.
