Despite the best efforts of the Widow Douglas (Jean Speegle Howard) to civilize him, Huck Finn (Ron Howard) remains largely incorrigible. When his alcoholic father (Dee Carroll) comes back to town and begins making trouble for him, Huck decides it's time to take off, and in running away bumps into a slave named Jim who's doing the same. Together they escape down the Mississippi River on a raft, and Huck warms to Jim enough to think he'd rather go to hell than ever turn in his friend.
