Forget "Easy Rider." THIS is a real biker movie! Dennis Hopper plays Chino, the leader of a particular nasty biker gang who assaults the old lady of a fellow biker, Jody McCrea (who I mostly remember from the Beach Party films). This sets off a war for revenge between McCrea and Hopper that offers some serious grindhouse fun if that's your sort of thing. I've always found it interesting that in the post-Tarantino film world that most every exploitation film sub-genre has found some level of resurgence, but the Biker Film is one that is still just about as unpopular and disreputable as it's ever been. Like most oddball sub-genres there a mix of good and bad, but I think there enough biker film of interest that this genre should be given a second look. Jonathan Demme did a biker "Roshomon" inspired film. John Milieus made a biker Dirty Does of sorts with "The Devil's 8." Biker film star Larry Bishop did make a pretty fun homage to the biker film genre, "Hell Ride," but I think the film flopped because there are so few people out there who understand and appreciate the biker genre. If you direct the genre, I believe it's essentially the wild west, motorcycles in place of horses, but populated with despicable and often repellent characters, presenting protagonists who likely couldn't even be described as anti-heroes. So everyone out there should do themselves a favor and start getting into biker films of the 70s. Let me know if you need any recommendations, but don't complain to me if you find the genre gross and off-putting (because it is). Oh, and in this film Casey Kasem plays Mouth.
