Storyline

Captain Ambrose comes from a long line of distinguished sailors, but is all too susceptible to seasickness. After the war, he buys himself a nautical command on shore, a decrepit amusement pier at the British resort town Sandcastle-on-Sea, whose prim town council has outlawed arcade games as a form of gambling. Running the pier like a Naval vessel, the Captain's determination to make it a modern, going concern meets steady opposition. But with an unexpected new ally, he pursues a remarkable scheme to liberate his "ship" from land authorities.—Rod Crawford

Short Review

A wonderful heartwarming Ealing film with a delightful cast, Alec Guinness a failed Sea Captain who suffers from seasickness, retires to buy a pier (Hunstanton Pier ) The Pier is run down and the begins to turn it around, but some corrupt Council Board members and a Corrupt Mayor, want the land and plan to demolish The Pier when it is found out they turn the Pier into a static boat, and as the plan starts to work, the corrupt gang try to pull down the pier. The Captain has to overcome his seasickness to save the pier and capture the bad guy. A lovely film, sadly the pier in the film has now been demolished along with most of the buildings in the location of the film.
