Short Review

A strong cast is wasted in this weak period biopic. Clark Gable plays real-life Irish nationalist leader Charles Parnell in the late 1800s. The cast also includes Myrna Loy, Edmund Gwenn, Alan Marshal, Donald Crisp, and Billie Burke. Overlong, slow moving, and just plain boring. The film was a notorious flop and following this film Gable told MGM he didn't want to do any more period films, which resulted in him being reluctant to play is most famous role, Rhett Butler in "Gone with the Wind" two years later. This film actually made it into the book "The Fifty Worst Films of All Time (and how they got that way)," but the film isn't that terrible. It's one of those like "Heaven's Gate" that are bad, but still kind of interesting.
