Young Czech immigrant Karel Novak (Francis Lederer) loses the small amount of money he has when he attempts to enter the United States and ends up penniless on the streets of New York at the height of the Great Depression. Sympathetic chorus girl Sylvia Dennis (Ginger Rogers) and her teenage brother, Frank (Jimmy Butler), take pity on the young man, but their attempts to help him cause unwanted trouble for themselves that could get the orphaned Frank sent to a foster home.
illegal alien, chorus girl, brother, police officer, social worker, melodramatic, moving, new york city, apartment, street, ship, family, immigration, poverty, bureaucracy, marriage, underdog, sacrifice, love, 1930s
The story is pleasantly enough told, but Mr. Lederer's performance is so good that he seems entitled to a more impressive picture.
